Also check out etckeeper to keep /etc under git revision control, it's fantastic (on Ubuntu it's less easy as you have to make sure you install etckeeper either at the same time as git or after without having bzr installed otherwise it'll configure itself to use bzr and commit automatically before you can fix it to use git).
