Thanks Steve. Sadly the mobo is old enough that I doubt it could have usb3, and the scanner worked on that physical usb port with older ubuntu and iscan, so I'm not going to be that lucky. Tomorrow I'll try waking up the other mobo buried under papers on my desk, with ubuntu 10.04 still on the attached HD. That might win me some breathing space. Erik
