A further development of note is the move to SSDs attached directly to the PCI-Express bus, with no drive controller required. Example: http://www.ramcity.com.au/blog/all-about-pcie-ssds-part-1-windows-linux/1313... (still expensive, but this should change.)
Those don't look very hot swappable, but I there are some PCI-E drives available that are.
