I would guess in your case the period has nothing to do with it and that the person has mistyped the email address spelling

[your normal one.] How is that not absolute confirmation of the ignorance of period characters? Already, the RFC takes away capitalization from emails, unless I am mistaken, but periods should be accepted as one of any of the available "normal" characters for the local part of the email address.
