You wouldn't need to backup the bootloader if you used syslinux. It's mbr.bin is static and dumb and the same everywhere. The only smarts are in the PBR and ./ldlinux.sys (which is chattr -i on ext, and completely hidden on btrfs). It makes life much easier when a stupid installer hoses the MBR, because instead of booting a live CD and hoping the CD has a similar enough version of grub and then doing grub-install or whatever, you just cat mbr.bin >/dev/sda
