Hi All, I have read and absorbed most of what I read, though some has left me confused, so first the new status quo: I have a Ubuntu 18.04 machine running 1 x 1TB drive it was installed before I was alerted to the better opportunity of the Server install, so it has LVM but nothing else I have restored some data to the hard drive but I have left a lot on dropbox. Restoring huge slabs of data over USB3 is still very time consuming and has consumed my weekend apart from 3 loads of washing and cutting a load of firewood. Now despite all that has been doneI am prepared to do it all differently in order to get it right. So ... I will pick up another 1Tb HDD and I will reclaim a port from one of my two optical drives Then, with 2 x 2Tb and 2 x 1xTb I will connect all drives and load the DVD to perform a server install (existing RAM=Kingston KVR 4GB SINGLE DDR3 1333) I doubt that this is ECC RAM I have 4 slots in my MB I have two filled I would like to have 16Gb RAM so maybe Caribbean Gardens next Sunday So this is where the road gets muddy: If LVM is installed first followed by an MDADM set up, is that LVM on RAID or RAID on LVM (and which is best?) Or since it has more options for the server install, do I partition the 1TB drives and format with ZFS and use the ZFS RAID ? How do I restrict the system install to the first 100Gb on each disk for / and the other 900Gb /home for general duty data (music and some instructional videos) and then call the second RAID set/home/data or /home/photos whatever Format the drives with ZFS and select the level of Software installation and kick it into gear? I am prepared to go through the whole thing again, this time with a roadmap, just so that I may end up with a robust storage plan. Apparently Google have dropped the price on Google Drive to 50%, so I can get 2TB storage for US$10 per month, Dropbox costs me US$10 per month for 1 Tb. So with RAID and two cloud options, I am feeling reasonably safe. May I request some input for the muddy bit of the road, please? Andrew Greig On 21/05/18 21:08, Russell Coker via luv-main wrote:

I could buy another 2 Tb drive, but what to do with the 1Tb drive. I thought I could have bare system running onthe 1Tb and all storage on a RAID pair. What you have will work fine, there's nothing wrong with it. I just think that you're better off having your OS disk on some form of RAID as well.
The easiest way to do that is to just get another 1TB drive (approx $60). Then you'd have two mirrored drives, one for OS & home dir and other stuff, and one for your photos. Another option is to buy a 4TB disk for $150 and use it with the 2*2TB disks for 4TB of RAID-1 capacity.
