I've been going around in circles in various forums and on google chasing this. I'm running Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) Update 4 with Cinnamon. I've installed MS Office 2010 via PlayOnLinux and now want to alter the behaviour of the desktop, nautilus and the like such that if I dbl-click a .pptx file it open will open in PowerPoint 2010.
The prescribed method is right-click on a file of this type in Nautlius, then go Properties -> Open With -> Show Other Applications and then choose the one you want. But Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 is not an option present (nor for that matter are the other Office apps).
Well the M$Office programs are not really installed in linux, playonlinux is invoking them so they dont show up as being able to be used as default
So, how do I either get them in that list or what can I edit directly to make it so?
however here is a thread on playonlinux.com the third post on the page by lists a method (and script) to get this working http://www.playonlinux.com/fr/topic-989.html
from the post 'By the way, I also wrote a small script that allows setting any program installed via PlayOnLinux as default application for any MIME type. It takes two arguments: the $1 is the name of the application as installed in PlayOnLinux, $2 is the (Linux) path to the file to be given as argument to the Windows application' cheers Mark --
