Senior Sysadmin role, Life Sciences, Melb.

Hi All, We have a vacancy in our team for a Senior System Administrator/Scientific Computing Specialist, working in the Life Sciences area, specifically agricultural research. The team supports a scientific computing environment centered on a Linux cluster currently with 2800+ cores and the networking, storage, backup/DR and physical datacentre infrastructure which supports that. In addition, we are responsible for a number of machines which control and acquire data from laboratory devices such as DNA Sequencers, Mass Spectrometers and High-Throughput plant imaging systems and pass that down to the main systems for analysis and storage. We have 1.4PB of storage, 1/10/40gbs networks and a variety of pretty cool tech, supporting some high-profile science projects such as the Dairy Futures and Sheep CRC's and the 1000 Bulls Genome Project. It is a broad technology domain, covering Linux, Windows, storage, networking and virtualisation, as well as security, backup/DR and quite a bit of scripting. The position is with the Computational Biology group of the Biosciences Research branch of the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (we used to be known as Department of Environment and Primary Industries) based at the AgriBiosciences Centre on the Bundoora Campus of LaTrobe University. Our line management is through the science group, not the Corporate IT, hence the official designation of the role as a Senior Research Scientist. Life Sciences is a pretty dynamic environment and as such, the supporting infrastructure is constantly undergoing change, both physically and in a software sense. This is not a set-and-forget space to be working in. The application process is through the Victorian Government Careers website and the position is advertised there, along with Seek and Adzuna. As mentioned, it's advertised as a Senior Research Scientist, so it may not come up if you use purely IT-related search terms. Applications close on 30th of March. If you're interested, feel free to drop me a line off-list and I can pass on the PD. I'd attach it here, but the list software may strip the PDF.
