Sorry for the delay in setting up this mailing list, but here it is. That was a very successful BarCamp ... what ideas do we have for further promotion and development of Linux in Geelong? Best wishes to you all, Lev Lafayette LUV president

Thanks Lev for setting up the mailing list, much appreciated. Some of the key themes that came out of the discussions at Software Freedom Day on Saturday regarding building free and open source software communities (blogged at http://blog.kathyreid.id.au/2011/09/18/software-freedom-day-melbourne-2011-f...) that are relevant here include; - needing to keep the group broad in focus. The 'Geelong Web Technology' meetup group seems to have become very social media focussed rather than technology focussed, and I think if we had a broad 'free and open source' rather than just Linux focus it would be more sustainable. This would foreseeably stretch to topics such as PHP, MySQL, Apache, and other open source licensed tools / products. - identifying other groups that might want to become involved, such as the Geelong cohort of Melbourne Wireless - we might want to let ICT Geelong (www.ictgeelong.com.au) know that there is interest in a Linux / free and open source software group in the region - understanding what others would like to get out of the group. Would we like social catchups? Talks about various tools or products or software? ie GIMP or PHP or WordPress or Pidgin etc? - do we want to meet face to face? What are the benefits in this? If we do do we want beer / food etc? Kind regards, Kathy On 21/09/2011 3:25 PM, lev@levlafayette.com wrote:

Hi Kathy,
(blogged at http://blog.kathyreid.id.au/2011/09/18/software-freedom-day-melbourne-2011-f...)
Oh believe me, I've circulated that to hundreds of people :)
- needing to keep the group broad in focus.
Yes, absolutely. After all, strictly speaking, Linux is just the kernel. By itself that would make a fairly uninteresting user's group.
- we might want to let ICT Geelong (www.ictgeelong.com.au) know that there is interest in a Linux / free and open source software group in the region
Can't hurt... I suppose!
- understanding what others would like to get out of the group. Would we like social catchups? Talks about various tools or products or software? ie GIMP or PHP or WordPress or Pidgin etc?
This part is important. Developing a community means meeting regularly about subjects which the members are interested in and are attractive new members. A combination of technical and social at each meeting helps. Best wishes, Lev

So, what are we interested in topic-wise? Who do you think would be interested in a Linux / open source meetup in Geelong? Do we have any preferences for where? Preferences for day / time? --K.
