Coming from Windows a KDE desktop will be the most familiar. I prefer it anyway. I have been running openSUSE for a while. It may be a bit resource-hungry but it does what I want and is not over-complicated. In the past I have used Netrunner, which was great for a while, but the last version I loaded had a lot of problems with installing anything I needed. If it has been sorted out now it could be worth a visit, as I liked their approach. In the end it is a very personal choice. You may have to try a few before you find one that suits.
