Link: http://luv.asn.au/meetings/map Speakers: Richard Keech "Linux for monitoring and control in a sustainable house" Bernard Meade "Recent Developments in 3 Printing" Topics This talk will describe how the use of Linux with One-Wire bus sensors and controls can provide the smarts for an energy-efficient home. This will look at: * Hardware for monitoring of temperature, the use of water, and the use and generation of energy; * Wireless interfacing to smart meters; * One-Wire bus and how it interfaces to Linux; * How to switch devices using One-Wire bus; * Controlling data collection; * Choice of Linux platform (Raspberry Pi vs others); * Future work; * An overview of how energy and water use have each been reduced by 3/4. Richard completed a Masters of Environment at University of Melbourne in 2011. Richard's primary area of interest is energy technology and it's role in society's response climate change. Richard also has a Masters Degree (by research) in Digital Systems from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (1990). Richard works as a consultant to the Alternative Technology Association helping clients make best use of renewable energy and energy efficiency, and as a Systems Engineer for Solem Consulting analysing thermal system performances (like solar hot water systems). He has also worked for Beyond Zero Emissions, Red Hat as a senior consultant, and Cybersource as a senior consultant. Recent Development in 3D Printing 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, has started to influence a wide variety of research activities. Traditional areas such as Engineering and Architecture have greatly benefited from the new range of inexpensive yet highly capable machines, while areas such as Medicine and the Arts have just begun to recognize the potential impact. This is a truly disruptive technology that not only promises amazing things, it is already starting to deliver. This talk will be about how 3D printing is being used at the University of Melbourne, how it is changing research and teaching, and how it will change our lives in the next few years. It will also report on the recent "Inside 3D Printing" conference. Bernard Meade works at the University of Melbourne with the ITS Research team. In his role as Innovation and Outreach officer, he investigates emerging technologies and promotes them to the research community. He runs the Digital Fabrication service along with the University Digitisation Centre, which now offers several 3d printers and scanners to the University community.
