PLEASE NOTE RETURN TO ORIGINAL START TIME 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM Tuesday, October 2, 2018 Training Room, Kathleen Syme Library, 251 Faraday Street Carlton VIC 3053 Speakers: * Wen Lin, Using Linux/FOSS in non-alphabetic languages like Chinese * Shannon Pace, Haskell Using Linux/FOSS in non-alphabetic languages like Chinese --------------------------------------------------------- Wen will discuss different input methods on a keyboard first designed only for alphabetic-base languages. *Wen Lin* is currently the Treasurer of LUV (now part of Linux Australia). He has been in the IT profession for about 30 years, primarily in the system admin area - both Windows and Linux. He started to be active in the Free & Open Source Community since 2004, inspired by the first Software Freedom Day in Melbourne. Nowadays at work Wen is using RHEL. In his own time, his distros of choice are Ubuntu/Lubuntu, followed by Fedora & CentOS. For non-OS software, LibreOffice is one that he has spent a fair bit of time with. Recently he has also been fascinated with the wonder of Raspberry Pi. Wen has a particular interest in introducing friends to using Linux and FOSS, quite often breathing new life into old Windows PCs after converting them to Linux. Haskell ------- This talk will provide a wide-ranging overview of the Haskell programming language, touching on the origins of functional programming, how it differs from the imperative paradigm, and why Haskell is an intruiging member of the functional language family. Basic elements of the language will be used to demonstrate the power of functional concepts such as purity and laziness, which will serve as a springboard for understanding Haskell programs. *Shannon Pace* is a software engineer working for Daisee on Lisa, a call centre analytics system developed using Haskell.
