LUV Main October 2014 Meeting: History of MySQL, Content-Centric Networking

LUV Main October 2014 Meeting: History of MySQL, Content-Centric Networking Start: Oct 7 2014 19:00 End: Oct 7 2014 21:00 Event Link: http://luv.asn.au/2014/10/07 Location: The Buzzard Lecture Theatre. Evan Burge Building, Trinity College, Melbourne University Main Campus, Parkville. Location Link: http://luv.asn.au/meetings/map Speakers: • Stewart Smith "A History of MySQL" • Hank "Content-Centric Networking" A History of MySQL When MySQL was owned my MySQL AB it was doomed because it was a "toy" database. Soon after Sun bought MySQL AB for $1billion there was concern that MySQL was doomed at Sun.... and when Oracle bought Sun things looked even worse. That being said, the truth is a lot more nuanced than what has been widely reported. We'll look at why MySQL development has been so centralized and where it may be opening up. Who is doing actual development? What are they working on and is it going to help you with new or existing applications? How are they interacting with distributions and has there been any change in adoption? Why have so many hardware and software "next big things" in the MySQL world just vanished and does this have an implication for the MySQL variants of today? This is an insiders look at where the MySQL world has come from and where it's going. We'll look at Oracle MySQL, MariaDB, Percona Server and other MySQL distributions. Why do options other than Oracle MySQL exist? Are they seeing any significant adoption and is Oracle's MySQL 5.6 seeing any adoption or when may it see any? Should you switch to MariaDB? Is MariaDB becoming an entirely different database server? What other options do you have? Stewart currently works for IBM in the Linux Technology Center on KVM on POWER and OPAL firmware, giving him a job that is even harder to explain to non-Linux geek people than ever before. Previously he worked for Percona as Director of Server Development where he oversaw development of many of Percona’s software products. He comes from many years experience in databases and free and open source software development. He’s often found hacking on free software, taking photos, running, brewing beer and cycling (yes, all at the same time). He once helped build a monorail in the middle of the desert. Content-Centric Networking This talk will discuss shortcomings of the TCP/IP-based architecture of the internet and present the general idea of content-centric networking as a viable alternative, as well as Xerox PARC's CCNx implementation of the concept and related academic efforts under the name of Named Data Networking. This will look at: • Scalability problems of TCP/IP and the concept of "intelligence at the edge of the network" • Content-centric networking as a new "thin waist" of the hourglass architecture Comparison with CDNs and other ad-hoc solutions • CCNx/NDN implementations: Questions answered and left open • Opportunities for machine learning • Scalability-stability tradeoff • Speculation on impact on business and society The talk is an invitation to join research in this area in a hands-on manner. Hank is a physicist by education and application programmer by vocation. Having joined the internet pre-WWW he thinks it all went wrong at some point and only disruptive changes will bring it back on track. The Buzzard Lecture Theatre, Evan Burge Building, Trinity College Main Campus Parkville Melways Map: 2B C5 Notes: Trinity College's Main Campus is located off Royal Parade. The Evan Burge Building is located near the Tennis Courts. See our Map of Trinity College. Additional maps of Trinity and the surrounding area (including its relation to the city) can be found at http://www.trinity.unimelb.edu.au/about/location/map Parking can be found along or near Royal Parade, Grattan Street, Swanston Street and College Crescent. Parking within Trinity College is unfortunately only available to staff. For those coming via Public Transport, the number 19 tram (North Coburg - City) passes by the main entrance of Trinity College (Get off at Morrah St, Stop 12). This tram departs from the Elizabeth Street tram terminus (Flinders Street end) and goes past Melbourne Central Timetables can be found on-line at: http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/route/view/725 Before and/or after each meeting those who are interested are welcome to join other members for dinner. We are open to suggestions for a good place to eat near our venue. Maria's on Peel Street in North Melbourne is currently the most popular place to eat after meetings. LUV would like to acknowledge Red Hat for their help in obtaining the Buzzard Lecture Theatre venue and VPAC for hosting, and BENK Open Systems for their financial support of the Beginners Workshops Linux Users of Victoria Inc., is an incorporated association, registration number A0040056C. -- mailto:xanni@xanadu.net Andrew Pam http://www.xanadu.com.au/ Chief Scientist, Xanadu http://www.glasswings.com.au/ Partner, Glass Wings http://www.sericyb.com.au/ Manager, Serious Cybernetics
