Focus will of course be on the method called "Dual-boot" - specifically, Windows 10 and Linux on one computer. Since we can always get tons of documentation on the web, or videos on Youtube, on all details about installing Windows & Linux dual-boot on a PC, Wen won't be spending the entire presentation on just the how-to's. Instead, he will cover this topic from his own recent experience installing dual-boot OSs on a laptop. He will share with you the fun, the pain, some frustration, and the joy in finally getting a stable Ubuntu 18.04 running alongside a Windows 10 OS. He will also touch on a few things related to dual-boot installation on modern computers - e.g. UEFI, Secure Boot, Grub2, and disk partitioning. Wen Lin is currently the Treasurer of LUV (now part of Linux Australia). He has been in the IT profession for about 30 years, primarily in the system admin area - both Windows and Linux. He started to be active in the Free & Open Source Community since 2004, inspired by the first Software Freedom Day in Melbourne. Nowadays at work Wen is using RHEL. In his own time, his distros of choice are Ubuntu/Lubuntu, followed by Fedora & CentOS. For non-OS software, LibreOffice is one that he has spent a fair bit of time with. Recently he has also been fascinated with the wonder of Raspberry Pi. Wen has a particular interest in introducing friends to using Linux and FOSS, quite often breathing new life into old Windows PCs after converting them to Linux. There will also be the usual casual hands-on workshop, Linux installation, configuration and assistance and advice. Bring your laptop if you need help with a particular issue. This will now occur BEFORE the talks from 12:30 to 14:00. The talks will commence at 14:00 (2pm) so there is time for people to have lunch nearby. The meeting will be held at Infoxchange, 33 Elizabeth St. Richmond 3121. Late arrivals please call (0421) 775 358 for access to the venue. LUV would like to acknowledge Infoxchange for the venue. Linux Users of Victoria is a subcommittee of Linux Australia.
