  • Probably not useful to the OP, but a Linksys WRT54GL running OpenWRT
makes a nice 5 port managed switch, and you can even have multiple
SSID's on the WRT54GL these days so you can have one SSID per vlan. It's
only 100Mbit and may not even reach those speeds due to software
switching but it has its uses.

The mandatory requirement for me for VLAN's is repairing other peoples
stuff (normally because of virus infections), or even just when someone
else wants to use my internet. I can put it on a separate vlan (I call
it 'hostile') with no access to any of my other VLAN's, and limited
access to the internet for downloading virus scanner updates etc. It's
also nice to be able to tcpdump to look for traffic that shouldn't be -
if you think it has a virus but virus scanner software won't pick it up
then strange traffic can be a giveaway.

    James
